  • City:Carrollton
  • State:MO
  • Biography:

Dr. Hawkins received his degree as a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from the University of Missouri and immediately joined a veterinary practice in Scott City, KS where the practice emphasis was beef cattle feed yards, stocker cattle, and cow-calf operations.  He then joined the Production Medicine faculty at the College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Georgia where he taught numerous courses including Adult Bovine Digestive Disease, Production Medicine, and Ambulatory Production Medicine. In June of 2001, He took a position as Senior Technical Services Veterinarian with Bayer Animal Health where his duties involve all food animal products.

His activities as a Bayer, Technical Services Veterinarian include developing and presenting training for sales and marketing personnel, design and monitoring of post approval product research, receiving, investigating and resolving adverse drug event complaints, presenting educational seminars for veterinarians and producers, and interaction with veterinarians and producers to address product questions and concerns.

Dr. Hawkins is past president of the Academy of Veterinary Consultants, a graduate of the University of Nebraska Beef Cattle Certification Program, and Michigan State University’s Applied Statistics in Production Medicine Course.  He is the author of several articles and manuscripts and is frequently a speaker for both Veterinary and Cattlemen’s organization meetings.

In addition to activities in veterinary medicine, Larry has been active in the communities where he lived.  In Scott City, Kansas he served on both the City Council and school board.  He was a leader of several 4H projects, was a co-leader with his wife, Kathy for the Manning Jayhawkers Club, and a leader of Boy Scouts Explorers, Exploring Veterinary Medicine.

Larry has been active as a Christian in churches where ever they lived.  In Scott City KS he and Kathy were members of the First Baptist Church where they were very active.  During their time there, Larry was a Sunday School teacher for several different classes, a Trustee of grounds and buildings, and was the construction project leader for a building project that included the addition to the Church of a fellowship hall, kitchen, classrooms, and administrative offices.  Currently, Larry and Kathy are members of McCroskie Creek Baptist Church where Larry is a Sunday School teacher, Worship Leader and serves as a Deacon.

Larry and Kathy have four children. Angie Bradshaw, husband Terry and sons Aiden and Liam of Wentzville Missouri; Shellie Schminke, husband Brandon and son Caleb of Wichita, KS; Kevin of Seattle WA; and Nathan and wife Rebekah of Jefferson, GA.  Larry and Kathy make their home on a farm, nominated as a Century Farm, near Carrollton, MO.

Finally, Dr. Hawkins acknowledges that much of the credit for what he has accomplished should go to the support of his wife and family, his parents, and a string of mentors too numerous to mention all of them.  However I would be remiss if I did not mention the teaching and encouragement of Dr. Joe McGinity, Dr. Jim Coffman, Dr Richard Spencer, Dr. Phil Randall and Dr. Cary Christensen.
