Dr. Gene Grellner grew up in Frankenstein, Missouri on a beef cow/calf and swine operation. He was the oldest of 8 children, with him having 3 brothers and 4 sisters. He always enjoyed being around animals, but it wasn’t until his junior year of high school that he started considering veterinary medicine as a profession. Dr. James Massman took him and several of his classmates to a career day at the College of Veterinary Medicine in Columbia, MO in 1975, and from there his interest had peaked.
After graduating high school 1976, he went on to the University of Missouri where he earned his B.S. in Animal Science. He stayed very involved during his undergrad, with being a member of FFA, the Missouri Pork Producer’s Association, the Pre-Veterinary Club, Block and Bridle Club, and serving as an Animal Science Student Council Graduate Representative. From there he went on to get his master’s degree in animal science with an emphasis in Swine Production & Management and Nutrition. He then received his D.V.M from the University of Missouri in 1985. That same year he was a member of Phi Zeta and had received a Poultry Award from the college of veterinary medicine.
Before becoming the sole owner and practitioner of his own practice, he had worked in Nashville, Illinois at the North Mill Veterinary Clinic and in California, Missouri at the California Veterinary Clinic. In 1987, he opened a mixed practice in Loose Creek, Missouri called. Countryside Veterinary Clinic. He has been a solo practitioner there since it opened.
Grellner also worked as a Livestock Market Veterinarian from 1991-1994 and taught Swine Production at Lincoln University in 1997. He continues to stay active in the profession by being a member of the American Association Bovine Practitioners, American Association Swine Practitioners, the Missouri Veterinary Medical Association, the American Veterinary Medical Association, Gamma Sigma Delta, Alpha Zeta, and the Missouri Pork Producers Association.
Supporting him today is his wife Janis, who they have been married since May 1986. They have three children together, their oldest son Garrett and his wife Cassidy, along with two grandchildren, Jane who is 2.5 years old and Claire who is 5 months old. Their daughter Mikayla and husband Luke, and their youngest child, Lindsay.
