Dwayne Garrett

    Dr. Dwayne Garrett was born July 17, 1939. He received his education from the Wentzville and Wright City School Districts. He was an active FFA Member and received a State Farmer Award in 1957 and was also the runner up to the Star State Farmer Award that year.

    Dwayne was enrolled at the University of Missouri in 1957. He graduated with a Bachelors in Science degree, majoring in Animal Husbandry. He was a member of the University Livestock Judging Team which placed in the top 10 of college teams at the American Royal and Chicago International Contest. He was a member of the Farmhouse Fraternity as well as the Gamma Alpha Graduate Fraternity. Dr. Garrett was accepted into the School of Veterinary Medicine in 1961. He and Jeanette Hill were married on June 9, 1962. During his time in Veterinary school he had 2 mentors; Dr. Theo Brune of Warrenton, MO and Dr. Charles Martin of Marceline, MO. Dwayne graduated Veterinary School in 1965.

    Dr. Garrett started his professional career in the Wentzville and Troy Veterinary Clinics with two Associates. During the early years he served on various state committees in the MVMA. In 1966 Dr. Garrett joined the Wentzville Lions Club and he became active in district and state Lions. In 1992-1993 he was elected as district governor. In 1993-1994 he was elected as chairman of the State Council of Governors. In 1996 he was elected to the position of International Director for Lions Clubs International Association in Montreal, Canada. He and Jeanette visited over 40 states and 11 offshore countries representing Lions Clubs International. He also served on numerous USA/Canada Lions Leadership Forums as presenter and moderator. He served five years on the Forum Planning Committee. The Lions Clubs International was a very busy, yet rewarding time in Dr. Garrett’s life. After selling his Veterinary Partnership he began doing relief work. He is also a lifetime member of the MVMA (Missouri Veterinary Medical Association) and AVMA (American Veterinary Medical Association). Dr. Garrett has told many audiences and friends he went to college because his father sold the family farm. This is when he decided to have a career involving his love and passion for animals.

    His family now consists of his wife; Jeanette, son, Curt and wife Sally. Grandsons; Lee, wife Ashley, David, and Bradley. Dr. Garrett also has two Great grandsons, Chase and Myles. He has a sister Judy Coons, and a late daughter, Sharon who passed away in 1988. Throughout his life his passion was family, hunting, fishing, and Lions Clubs International. He loved his brittanys and labradors. The person who nominated him for the Foundation was Dr. Carol Ryan. Her and her family were clients of the Clinics Dr. Garrett owned and partnered in. Dr. Garrett has made the remarks that he has had the pleasure to watch her grow and attend the University of Missouri Veterinary School. He was elated when she joined the Wentzville & Troy Veterinary Clinics after her graduation.

    Dr. Garrett retired from Veterinary Medicine in 2021 after developing COVID. Dr. Dwayne Garrett pursued 56 years of Veterinary Medicine all while enjoying his family and building lasting memories.
